Microsoft just sent out the last and final reminder to remember its previous Windows Mobile 6.x customers, that beginning May 22, 2012, the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service will no longer be available. Putting all its efforts in Windows Phone 7 and later, users with a Windows Mobile 6.x device, like the still popular HTC HD2, will no longer be able to browse, buy or download applications directly on their Windows Mobile 6.x phone using the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace application and service. Therefore, Microsoft gives the final recommendation you review the applications or games installed on Windows Mobile 6.x phone and install any available updates in advance of the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service shut-down.
Applications and games acquired from the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service installed on Windows Mobile 6.x phone will continue to work after the service is discontinued on May 22, 2012. However, additional downloads of these applications and games from the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service will no longer be available.
However, there's a massive draw-back. All this works well until a device needs a hard reset. In this case, all phone data, including applications acquired through the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service, as well as data and user-specific settings, will be deleted from the Windows Mobile 6.x phone
Windows Mobile applications and games that are compatible with Windows Mobile 6.x may still be available directly from their developers or via third-party marketplaces. As an alternative, users could use a Marketplace hack which was just recently published by Xda-developers.com. It's a modified Marketplace app for Windows Mobile which quits after an applications was downloaded, right before it's installed. Once the Marketplace app quits, the downloaded app is available as a cab file which can be backed-up for later use.
