HTC is finally going the whole hog and has published a list with time frames, which informs about which of its devices can expect an Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich update when. According to this official and more or less final list, HTC plans to upgrade an impressive amount of 17 smartphones to ICS. The majority of devices will receive upgrades between June and July 2012 and HTC expects to finish upgrades in August 2012.
While the list represents HTC's own target timeline, the effective date can vary due to partner and network testing and approval processes for device updates. Therefore it can take up to 45 additional days for all carriers and countries to get the update after a rollout has begun.
The smartphone HTC will give its Ice Cream Sandwich-love are:
- DROID Incredible 2 by HTC To be determined (by end of August)
- HTC Amaze 4G May - June
- HTC Desire S June - July
- HTC Desire HD July - August
- HTC EVO 3D June - July
- HTC EVO 4G+ May - June
- HTC EVO Design 4G June - July
- HTC Incredible S June - July
- HTC Sensation March - June
- HTC Sensation 4G March - June
- HTC Sensation XE March - June
- HTC Sensation XL April-Jun
- HTC Rezound June - July
- HTC Rhyme June - July
- HTC Thunderbolt July - August
- HTC Velocity 4G March - June
- HTC Vivid March - June
Not listed are HTC's two Android tablets, the HTC Flyer and the HTC Jetstream which have to run on Android 3.1/Honeycomb until its end of life. Other smartphones, which aren't receiving any Ice Cream Sandwich-love are the HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer, and others which are devices with 512 MB ROM or less only. However, HTC made also clear that devices not being upgraded to Android 4.0 will still get software improvements, security fixes and technical support as needed.
Last but not least, HTC also unveiled which HTC Sense version the upgraded devices will receive. It's HTC Sense 3.6 only, not the newer and recently introduced HTC Sense 4 since some aspects of Sense 4 require dedicated hardware, which is not available on all devices.
While the one or the other device might be missing the Android 4.0 upgrade, a list of 17 devices is really impressive and with such a list, we can't blame HTC that the upgrade takes a little bit longer.
